Warmer weather could create the perfect opportunity to take advantage of outside area events this weekend.
Whether it's Whimmydiddle in Scott City, a walk at Lee Richardson Zoo, a tour of an alpaca farm in Ulysses, an afternoon with Mark Twain at the library, taking the bike for a spin for a good cause, seeing local talent or grooving to authentic Mexican music, Garden City and surrounding towns have something for everyone this weekend.
Here are some weekend area events:
- National Alpaca Farm Day — Jornada Alpaca Ranch owners Phil and Theresa Hammond join in the celebration of National Alpaca Farm Day and invite the public to their alpaca farm in Ulysses from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday for fleece spinning and processing demonstrations, alpaca products for sale, a mini-obstacle course event, alpaca sales, farm tours and more. All activities will be free. The Jornada Alpaca Farm is located at 2478 W. Road 16 in Ulysses. For more information, call (620) 356-4019 or e-mail jornada@pld.com.
- Whimmydiddle — Scott City's Whimmydiddle Arts and Crafts Festival is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in Scott City Park. The festival was named after an Appalachian wooden toy that whirls around with the wind. The annual festival started in 1972. Vendors show off handmade crafts, food, clothing, furniture, jewelry, pottery and more. Money raised through the event is used by the Alpha Omega Sorority in Scott City, a local chapter of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, a national philanthropic organization for women. At last year's Whimmydiddle, festival goers enjoyed more than 150 booths.
- Public Dance — Promociones Ortega is hosting a public dance at the Finney County Fairgrounds Exhibition Building, 409 Lake Ave., from 8:30 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday. The dance will feature Durangense music from Durango, Mexico, with a band called Los Creadorez. Bands Linderos and Reveldes will play Norteño music from Chihuahua, Mexico. Tickets are $30 pre-sale and are available at El Remedio, 1005 E. Fulton St.; Mariscos Puerto Nuevo, 1107 N. Taylor Ave.; La Chiquita, 210 Fleming St.; and Quicker Market, 4005 E. U.S. Highway 50. Tickets also will be available at the door for $40.
- Babies and Bikes Benefit Run — Heartland Riders for Christ will be sponsoring a benefit run for the ABC Pregnancy Care Center on Saturday. The run will begin at Clark Motorsports, 4575 E. U.S. Highway 50, and go to Cimarron, the Harley Davidson dealer in Dodge City, then to Jetmore and will end back at Clark Motorsports. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. The first bike will leave at 9:30 a.m. and the last bike no later than 10 a.m. The cost is $25 per person, or $30 per couple. The cost includes lunch, a vest pin, ticket for drawings and the chance to win the grand prize. More tickets are given for bringing a pack of diapers and/or wet wipes. There also will be a drawing for those who bring baby blankets and quilts to donate to the pregnancy center. For more information, contact Cory Davidson at (620) 353-6966.
- Alzheimer's Memory Walk — Registration begins at 1 p.m. at Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, and the walk will start at 2 p.m. The walk is a benefit for the Alzheimer's Association and for respite care in southwest Kansas. Before the walk, families can purchase tribute flags with a family member's name on it. The flags are modeled after flags flown in the Himalayas. The colorful flags remain until the wind has weathered their threads over time. Locals believe their messages are released into the universe. Mary Seibert, an organizer of the event, said the flags represent the long journey of people with Alzheimer's. For more information, call Barbara McKennna at 275-6382 or Seibert at 276-8933. Anyone is welcome to attend. Free pizza from Napoli's will be provided.
- Mark Twain Days — The Friends of the Finney County Public Library will be hosting Mark Twain Days at 2 p.m. Saturday at the library, 605 E. Walnut St. The event will be for the dedication of the newest of two life-size bronze sculptures that features Twain sitting on a park bench. The "Journeys" sculpture was dedicated in July and features a boy flying on a paper airplane. The sculptor of both "Twain" and "Journeys of the Imagination," Gary Lee Price of Springville, Utah, will speak. Andrew Mahoney, Garden City, will make an appearance as Mark Twain. Games for kids will include a white-washing fence race and other activities that characters in Twain's novels may have done. Refreshments will be served¬ by the Friends of the Library. Acquiring the two bronze sculptures has been a project of the Art & Beautification Committee of the Friends of the library for the past three years. Funds still are needed to complete the project, and tax-deductible donations may be made at the Library or to Nelda Lewis, chairman.
- Our Gang Talent Show — Tickets are available for the Big Brothers Big Sisters "Our Gang Talent Show," set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Clarion Inn, 1911 E. Kansas Ave. The two-hour show costs $50 per ticket, and all the proceeds will benefit the after-school program for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Finney and Kearny Counties. Tickets can be purchased at Garnand Furniture, Main Street Salon, Vogue Salon and Commerce Bank. The event, which is for adults, will include hor d'oeuvres, cocktails and a silent auction.
- Garden City Farmer's Market — Featuring a variety of home-grown produce, home-crafted items and homemade foods, 7 a.m. to noon Saturday. The market will be the last one of the season. The Farmer's Market is in the parking lot of Westlake Hardware at the corner of Fleming Street and Harding Avenue.
- Antiquities Photos — Florence Wilson Elementary School's Parent Teacher Organization is sponsoring "Antiquities Photos" for children from 2 to 8:15 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Photos will be taken at the school, 1709 Labrador Blvd. This year, the photos will be old-fashioned sepia pictures with a soft focus color in the picture. Families will receive one 10-by-13 inch photo of their child with a purchase of a $10 coupon. Antiquities Studios will provide clothing and props to personalize the moment. Photo shoots are only available by appointment. To make an appointment, call 805-7400.
