A fair weekend forecast

There are plenty of activities for families to keep busy this weekend, ranging from county fairs to a concert in the park.

The Finney County Fair continues into the weekend, and activities tonight include 7 Bridges Road, a tribute to the Eagles, starting at 8:30 p.m.; the Western Kansas Truck and Tractor Pull at 8 p.m. Friday at the grandstand arena, and a demolition derby at 8 p.m. Saturday at the grandstand arena.

On Sunday, registration for the kids pedal tractor pull starts at 11 a.m. and the event begins at noon at the grandstand arena.

There are also other county fairs going on this weekend.

In Wichita County, events include mutton bustin' at 7 p.m. Friday, a rodeo at 8 p.m., a teen dance from 9 p.m. to midnight and a carnival from 6 p.m. to midnight. On Saturday, there's a parade at 10 a.m., junior barrel racing at 7 p.m., a rodeo at 8 p.m., and a fair dance from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. There also will be a carnival Saturday following the parade until midnight.

In Haskell County, Friday's events include a round robin at 9 a.m., buyer's supper at 5:30 p.m., and a livestock sale at 7.

In Greeley County, events happening on Friday include a beef show at 9 a.m., a Wallow in the Mud and Mud Castle Contest at 9:30 a.m., a pedal tractor pull at 2 p.m., a free barbecue and watermelon feed from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., a watermelon eating contest at 5 p.m., a dodgeball tournament at 6 p.m., and a livestock auction at 7 p.m.

There's also a schedule full of events for Saturday at the Greeley County Fair, including a fun run and walk at 7:30 a.m., a parade at 10 a.m., turtle races at 1 p.m., a free community swim at the Greeley County swimming pool from 1 to 6 p.m., a pedal tractor pull at 2 p.m. along with adult and children's games, a mud volleyball tournament at 4 p.m., a teen fair dance from 8 to 11 p.m. at the CYAT Center and another fair dance from 9 p.m. to midnight.

And in Stevens County, events Friday include a round robin showmanship at 10:30 a.m., Old Timer's Show at 5 p.m., a barbecue and watermelon feed from 5 to 6 p.m., a free concert at 5 and 6:30 p.m., and the 4-H and FFA livestock sale at 6:30 p.m.

Other events going on this weekend include:

  • The Garden City Farmers Market runs from 7 a.m. to noon each Saturday through Sept. 26 in the parking lot of Westlake Hardware at the corner of Fleming and Harding streets.
  • The Airport Raceway, near Garden City Regional Airport, has races starting at about 8 p.m. Saturday.
  • The Stevens Park Concert series will feature Born in a Barn, which will play country and classic rock songs. The concert, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, is free.
