Boy arrested for alleged battery
By The Telegram
A 10-year-old Garden City boy was arrested Monday on allegations of attempted aggravated battery, after a woman reported he threatened her 6-year-old daughter with a knife.
The girl had been standing outside Victor Ornelas Elementary School, 3401 E. Spruce St., shortly after 3 p.m. Monday holding a box of candy her teacher had given her as a reward for good conduct, said Garden City police Capt. Mike Utz.
The boy allegedly approached her and asked for candy. When she refused, he allegedly pulled out a pocket knife, opened the blade, pointed it at the girl and threatened to kill her, Utz said. He eventually turned around and walked away without the candy.
Police responded at 4:30 p.m. Monday to the home of the girl's mother. She told police what had happened and said she had observed the suspect entering his residence, according to police.
When police went to the boy's home at 5:28 p.m. Monday, they recovered the knife and arrested the boy, Utz said.
He was taken to Programs Assessment Treatment Habilitation, and later was released to his parents.
USD 457 spokesman Roy Cessna said the school district investigated the incident, adding that the boy was disciplined according to school policy, although he wouldn't say specifically what the discipline was. He also said the school district sent home a letter to parents, notifying them of the incident.
