Christian Cowboy rodeo, Whimmydiddle set for this weekend

Published 9/27/2007 in News : Area coverage By Stephanie Farley

While vendors from across the state and country will be at Scott City's 35th annual Whimmydiddle Arts and Crafts Festival on Saturday, the local Garden City chapter of the organization Fellowship of Christian Cowboys is holding its roping and barrel racing fundraising event this weekend.

The local "Journey to the Cross" chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Cowboys will host its annual fundraiser Sunday at its facility, 1205 W. Maple St., starting at 9 a.m. with a cowboy church service and then women's junior and senior barrel racing starting at 10 a.m., team roping at 11 a.m. and a free covered dish meal at noon with the meat and beverages provided, according to Randy Fisher, past president for the "Journey to the Cross" chapter.

Fisher said the group expects to feed about 250 people, including rodeo contestants and spectators. Everyone is welcome to the group's sixth annual fundraiser, called "Times are Tough but God is Good" roping and barrel race, and there is no admission fee for the public.

Contestants pay $30 a rider for the barrel racing and $40 a team for roping.

The money raised goes to a scholarship fund the chapter has set up through Garden City Community College, enabling it to award a scholarship each year to a local student; updating and maintaining its facility; and to the chapter's goal of hosting a rodeo and Bible camp for youth ages 8 to 18 years old.

Also this weekend, the Whimmydiddle Arts and Crafts Festival is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the city park in Scott City. The event draws about 175 arts and crafts vendors and is sponsored by Alpha Omega, ESA, an international philanthropic organization, to raise money for those within and outside the community needing assistance. Products offered are handmade crafts ranging from clothing, jewelry and pottery to patriotic and dried floral items and arrangements, as well as various food booths.

Other events this weekend include:

n The Garden City jamboree, held once a month at the Senior Center of Finney County, 907 N. 10th, is scheduled for 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday. A covered dish meal is at 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact Jerry Miller at 353-4264 or Cheryl White at 271-3511.

n The Finney County Preservation Alliance is hosting a fundraiser, "Alley Jazz with Doug Crotty and friends," from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday to help pay the mortgage off on the Windsor Hotel. The evening will include food, beverages, an auction, live band and tours of the Windsor. Tickets were pre-sold for the event, which is being held in the alley directly behind the Windsor.
