Mrs. W.E. Jones To Teach Aides

Published 2/6/2010 in History Page

The new class of the Volunteer Nurse's Aide Corp which is being organized in Finney County, under the direction of the Red Cross Chapter, is to have the privilege of being instructed in the first unit of the work by Mrs. W.E. Jones, R.N.

Mrs. Jones was instructor for the VNAC classes of both 1942 and 1943. For this new group, her knowledge has been enriched by her experience with the earlier training classes. She took her nurse's training at Augustanna hospital, Chicago. Upon her graduation in 1912, Mrs. Jones served as surgical nurse at St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, until 1917. During the first World War of 1914-1918 she saw 18 months of service with the armed forces overseas: in charge of one of the large army operating rooms. Her work included also some health service through the Balkan countries.

Public Health Course

Following the war, Mrs. Jones took a four month's public health course at Western University, Cleveland, Ohio. For several years she served in various nursing capacities including county nursing and 18 months as superintendent for public health nurses for the Red Cross in southern Minnesota. She has had considerable experience as an instructor in home nursing classes, some of which were conducted in Finney County.

Mrs. Jones will conduct the first 35 hours of the 80-hour Nurse's Aide training. Classes will be held at St. Catherine's hospital and will be followed by practical demonstration and practice work in the hospital wards. American women between the ages of 18 and approximately 50, physically fit and willing to serve without pay, are enrolling as assistants to the graduate nurses. Each Nurse's Aide will do only those tasks assigned to her by a professional nurse.

That the class may complete organization and that instruction may begin at an early date under the leadership of Mrs. Jones, it is urged that women in Finney County enroll at once at the Red Cross headquarters in the court house. The Red Cross secretary, Miss Mildred Hope, and the chairman of the Volunteer Nurse's Aide committee, Mrs. Olney D. Newman, will be glad to confer with all American women who are interested in this training for services.
