Buffaloes' Big Last Quarter Noses Out Syracuse

Published 2/6/2010 in History Page

Garden City basketball fans saw about four minutes of good fast basketball last night and, fortunately for the home team, it was in the last four minutes of the game when the Buffaloes came to life and dropped in 11 points to overtake Syracuse and finally eke out a one point victory, 22-21.

At the half Garden City led 11 to 8, but were unable to score a point during the third quarter while Syracuse scored 11 points to lead 19-11. (It was a big night for elevens).

Phillips Stars

Coming out in the last period, Phillips who played his best game of the year, dropped in a free throw to get first blood. Then Mills of the visitors made two free throws, but Syracuse's scoring was over for the evening. Blickenstaff who had been held down all evening by some beautiful guarding on the part of Gould finally found the basket for a long shot, his first score of the game, and Syracuse was now leading 21-14. Jones found the hoop with a shot, and Blickenstaff hooked one in to make the score 21-18. Then Syracuse made the mistake of fouling Phillips and his second shot was good to make it 21-19. A few seconds later, Garden City recovered the ball after a shot by Syracuse and Blickenstaff again connected to make the score 21-21 with seconds to go.

Free Throw Does It

As Blickenstaff was shooting the tying shot a Syracuse player pushed Phillips, and the Garden City center was given two shots. With the pressure on him, he made the first one and then the Buffaloes took the ball outside instead of trying the second shot. Patee took it out and had time for one pass before the final gun blew.

Phillips was high point man with 11 points and Mills, Syracuse center, was second high with 10.

The first quarter was a slow affair with the Buffaloes having trouble getting up their steam and Syracuse not much better off.

Marsh, Syracuse forward, made a field goal and then Mills dropped in a hook shot. Phillips hit a free throw, and then Mills rung in a long one with the score Syracuse 6, Garden City, 3.

Half Score, 11-8

In the second quarter Spikes made a free throw and then Phillips got hot to score a field goal, a free throw and then another field goal in rapid succession. Marsh sunk a long one for Syracuse and then Phillips counted again from under the goal to make the halftime score Garden City 11, Syracuse 8.

While Garden City was going scoreless in the third quarter, Gould sank two shots from the floor and one free throw, Mills got two field goals and Marsh made one two-pointer to make Syracuse's 11 points.

Junior High Hot

In the preliminary game the Garden junior high school trounced the Syracuse juniors 41 to 12 with the local team displaying a classy exhibition of floor work and some expert aggressive guarding.

The junior high school was without the services of Trebilcock, who has been high scorer in several games and is out now with a sprained ankle, but they did not show the handicap. North was high point man with 12 points, Guy was right behind him with 10 and Oswalt found his scoring eye to make 9 points. Pinegar turned in a good game at guard as did Stenzel and his replacement, Hummer.

The Buffaloes will meet Plains here in a game Friday night.
