Quite a breeze out of the north this morning -- it hit close to 50 miles per hour around 9 o'clock and up in Nebraska it was doing better than around here ... Elmer Drew's hat went straight in the air shortly after he left the house this morning. Looking up he saw it doing a couple of wide loops and with considerable effort he recovered it ... The folks out at Deerfield and Lakin were without electricity between 5 and 9:30 this morning -- the high wind cut them off. And when the power went off their automatic gas furnaces likewise were off. One of the natives of Lakin told us it was a bit rough dressing in a very chilly room -- also substituted tea for coffee at breakfast since their old fashioned coffee pot had been tossed away many years ago ... We saw quite a caravan of newly arrived cadets on their way from the depot out to the army base -- they won't forget their first sight of this region. The combined snow and dust blowing across the highway made an ugly sight for newly arrived boys. But then they'll be agreeably surprised when our normal weather returns -- they couldn't match any place, regardless! ... Wish some of the rumor mongers could have seen this newly arrived cadet class. It would make them wonder what had become of their recent choice morsel -- that the local army air base was scheduled to close down. In fact, it's overdue about 30 days according to some of the boys ... Funny the rent hogs wouldn't believe the rumor -- their charges are "normal" ... A lot of folks get a hearty laugh out of the sign hanging on the front of the meat counter over at Traders Grocery. It reads, "Be nice to me -- good men are getting very scarce" ... Bill Fant was in here for a short visit last evening, talking about the increased scarcity of tires -- especially truck tires. The outlook is gloomy for you farmer lads who use and need your trucks -- you'd better cut your load size and drive slower, make more trips and get better acquainted with the three boys over on the gas panel! But there is a bright side to Bill Fant's visit. Bill Erkie dropped in also and exchanged a few pleasantries and when he was writing out his renewal check he related that things were very good out around Kalvesta. In fact, Mrs. Erkie had a chicken out on the farm that recently laid two perfectly good eggs in 15 minutes -- and she can prove it!
