Three Hierarchs to celebrate patronal feast day
The congregation of Three Hierarchs Orthodox Christian Church, 2009 N. Main St., will celebrate its patronal feast day in honor of the three Holy Hierarchs -- St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Theologian and St. John Chrysostom. The public is welcome to attend the celebration, which will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.
A special visitor for the occasion will be Bishop Basil of Wichita, who oversees 51 parishes located in Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Missouri and Western Iowa.
Bishop Basil will preside at the Divine Liturgy for the feast of the Three Hierarchs. Following the Liturgy, he will bless the iconostasis, an icon screen separating the sanctuary from the nave, which was installed last summer by members of St. Mary Orthodox Christian Church in Wichita.
Before his consecration as bishop in 1992, Bishop Basil was the pastor of St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral in Wichita. Prior to that he was an assistant to Metropolitan Philip Saliba, Primate of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese of North America, with headquarters in Englewood, N.J. A graduate of St. Vladimir's Seminary in Crestwood, N.Y., he was archdiocesan youth director before his ordination to the priesthood in 1990.
He has traveled widely, just recently returning from a visit to a monastery in England and to churches throughout Syria, including the cathedral of Patriarch Ignatius IV of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch in Damascus, Syria.
This will be Bishop Basil's first visit to Three Hierarchs Church in Garden City, which was established in 2008.
