Relishing leftovers
Published 3/25/2008
Doing right by leftovers is a commandment observed by the furtive and frugal among us. What follows is a random roundup of leftovers.
***
Risky-ness. Scientists have observed that obesity increases the risk of gingivitis, that sugary drinks increase the risk of Alzheimer's and that blondes increase the risk of men behaving stupidly.
***
The number of states where a court has held that women must return engagement rings if the wedding doesn't happen: 18.
***
Dangerously overeducated. There are only 10 kinds of people -- those who understand binary and those who don't.
***
"These people get in their cars and go west across Kansas which feeds them and they never look at it because their chins are on the dashboard looking for the Rocky Mountains. West Jackson has watched them doing that. There are no snowy peaks in Kansas." -- Wendell Barry.

The Journal of the Kansas Bar Association covers drugs, alcohol, gambling and depression.¬
***
More than 35 million Americans are facing hunger and nearly 96 billion pounds of food are wasted every year.
Heaven has in store what thou has lost ... Not all who wander are lost.
***¬
When nutrition expert Ancel Keys turned 100, he was asked whether his diet might have contributed to his long life.
He replied: "Very likely but I have no proof."¬
***
"In a telephone survey of Americans ages 18 to 50, a quarter of those interviewed said they had a tattoo. Now it's probably more." -- from the March issue of Harvard Health Letter.
***
Yoga is cheaper than a therapist ... "Ancora imparo" on a bracelet is Italian for "I'm still learning" ..."When I hear music, I fear no danger."
-- Henry David Thoreau said that.
***
These messages on garden plaques and stakes: "I tried it but it died," "Grow dammit" and "I don't remember planting this."
***
An English major says, "You do the math." A T-shirt warns: "Careful, or you'll end up in my novel." And the message on a onesie is: "Oh, come let us adore me." Of course you know what a onesie is ... Leonardo the Terrible Monster is a stuffed animal for kids who don't scare easily.
***
Sayings: A Dr. Seuss shirt says "There's a wocket in my pocket." A sweat shirt message is "My book club can beat up your book club." And "Teachers open the door. You enter by yourself" is a Chinese proverb.
***
There's a daily calendar that has a common error in English usage on each page. Finding it, I guess, makes one's day.
***
Advice: Never judge a book by its movie ... Another T-shirt message: "It's good to be me." And another: "Life is a journey not a destination."
***
What follows is a "left over" in the best sense of term. It's something to remember and return to again and again. The 40th anniversary of the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be coming up on April 4.¬
At an address to the 47th annual National Association for the Advancement of Colored People on June 27, 1956, in San Francisco, King said:
"Now I realize that there are those all over who are telling us that we must slow up. ... But we cannot afford to slow up. We have a moral obligation to press on. We have our self-respect to maintain. But even more we can't afford to slow up because of our love for America and our love for the democratic way of life. ... We must keep moving. We must keep going."
