New salon opening downtown

Garden City area residents searching for a haircut will soon have a new option with the opening of Curtis Anthony Salon, 112 E. Chestnut St. Curtis Anthony Perez has been a long-time stylist in Garden City and decided to try his hand at not only styling hair, but running his own business.

"It's something that I probably should have done 10 years ago," Perez said. "But I finally just decided that a small salon works better for me."

Though he says opening his own salon is something he should have done years ago, he did not begin the process until about a year ago, he said. A specific opening date for the new salon has not been set, but Perez expects it to be open mid- next week, pending an inspection by the state.

While some salons provide an array of services, Perez has a singular goal for his salon.

"I just want to do hair. I don't care to educate or do platform work. I just want to do hair," Perez said.

The stylist wants his salon to be an intimate and inviting experience. Perez currently has one other stylist in his employ, Kasey Pile, and he plans to have no more than three stylist total. Keeping the salon small will allow it to remain intimate, Perez said.

Perez has been a hair stylist at several salons around Garden City, and he likes the freedom that comes with the profession. Pile shares Perez's feelings on the freedom of hair styling.

"I have two kids, so it allows me time to make money, as well as be at home with them and not work a 9-5 everyday.

Curtis Anthony Salon does not have specified hours, and will be flexible depending upon the needs of customers. Typically, the salon will be open Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to whenever the stylists finish serving customers, though no set time has been established.

"We don't want to set hours, because then people will think 'Well, they're not open.'" Perez said. "Friends come together, mother and daughters come together, co-workers come together," Perez said. "I do hair for a lot of educators."

Appointments can be made by calling Perez at 250-4706, by e-mailing curtisanthony@sbcglobal.net or via Facebook.com by searching the name of the salon. Curtis Anthony Salon will be taking walk-ins as well.

"We want to have a good time and make people feel good about themselves," Pile said.
