A series of professional development courses of interest to area employers and employees will be coming soon from the Business and Industry Institute at Garden City Community College.
Performance Management, taught by Cathy McKinley, dean of the GCCC Continuing Education and Community Services Division, will outline techniques for better monitoring, documentation and communication about performance in the workplace.
"Successful performance management doesn't just happen. It takes a concentrated ongoing effort. It is not just a once-a-year evaluation process" McKinley said.
Topics to be highlighted include open communication, coaching, feedback, documentation of work performance and use of encouragement and empathy to build successful relationships for staff performance and organizational goals.
The course, set for 6 to 8 p.m. March 4 and 11, includes a fee of $99, which includes a manual.
Another upcoming institute offering is a free presentation entitled Diversity: Food for Thought. The one-hour training session, taught by Jeremy Deckard, public information officer for the Kansas Human Rights Commission, focuses on the value of finding common ground and building relationships with people of diverse backgrounds.
Deckard will show how the use of diversity is necessary in today's competitive business climate. Recognizing the wide range of experiences and backgrounds each person brings to the workplace, Deckard said, allows businesses to capitalize on the advantage of employee diversity.
The Diversity: Food for Thought presentation will take place from 1:30 to 2:30 March 9 on the second floor of the Student and Community Services Center.
Although there is no charge for the Diversity presentation, attendees are asked to register one week in advance. Registration and information are available by calling 620-276-9647 or via e-mail at B&I@gcccks.edu.
