It is called the Holcomb Invitational girls golf tournament.

It is played on the Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, six miles south of Garden City.

It is the home course for the Lady Longhorns.

Thursday afternoon, the host team enjoyed all the home golf course cooking that the Dunes had to offer.

Coach Scott Stegman watched four of his golfers finish in the top four in the individual competition. Translation team champion, too.

"It's a great day with the top four girls," Stegman said. "That's a formula for success. The girls played well, they've been improving with each tournament."

Leading the way for the Longhorns was junior Melissa Sizemore, whose 46 edged out her senior teammate, Amy Stegman, by one shot.

"It feels really good and makes me happy," Sizemore said of her victory, the first time she's finished ahead of Stegman. "It's one of the best rounds I've played even if it was a little windy. It was one of the nicest days we've had."

Sizemore, who managed just one par for her 9-hole round, said that staying out of the deep rough was crucial to the success of her round.

"I did a good job hitting the driver and staying out of the rough," Sizemore said. "I've been working on my putting and it helped today."

Sizemore credited her coach with an improved putting performance.

"He's helped me line up and aim better," Sizemore said of Stegman. "

Right behind Amy Stegman's 47 were Brianna Barlow and Sam Larick, each with a 48.

"They've all been shooting pretty close to each other," Stegman said of his team. "Melissa has been practicing hard and working on her swing. She wants to get better and this will give her more confidence."

Stegman indicated that he wants his group to continue to lower their scores as the season heads into its final month.

"We just want to get better every tournament," Stegman said. "This was our lowest total of the year."

The Longhorns' 189 team total was 16 shots better than runner-up Ulysses' 205. Syracuse was third at 216 and Colby was fourth with 219.

Next up for most of the area golf teams will be the Ulysses Invitational on Tuesday.
