This week we will continue with tips on preventing falls. This information is from the Kansas Senior Press.
Pour liquids over a sink or place a contrasting colored tray under containers of liquid to catch spills. Immediately clean up spills to prevent slipping.
Mark the edges of your stair steps with a bold, contrasting color.
Securely fasten bold, contrasting hand rails to both sides of the entire length of any staircase in your home. Hold the hand rails when you use the stairs, going up and down. Check the bolts and brackets to make sure they are secure.
If you must carry something while you're on the stairs, hold it on one hand and use the hand rail with the other. Don't let what you are carrying block your view of the steps.
If you have problems with your vision, balance or holding the rail, go up and down the stairs by sitting on each step.
Make sure the stairs are well-lit, with light switches at the top and bottom of the stairs and at each end of a long hallway.
In dark places, use night lights that are always on.
Finally, don't forget your furry friends who can easily get tangled around your feet. Place bells around your pets' necks so you are always aware of their location.
In addition to these tips, you might want to think about using a home monitoring service. Usually these consist of wearing a button on a cord around your neck or on a bracelet around your wrist. If you fall or need emergency help, you just push the button to alert the service.
