The two most exciting seasons at the zoo are spring and fall. The spring tends to bring the zoo many bundles of joy. This past spring was no exception with the addax calf, the otter pups, the Goeldi's monkey baby and the hammerkop chicks. Now it is the fall season with a different form of excitement, major events at the zoo.
Tomorrow, "A Wild Affair" is being hosted by the Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo. On Sept. 21 is International Red Panda Day. Then, Sept. 22 will be the grand opening of Cat Canyon. To finish up the fall season events we have the always popular Boo! At the Zoo.
"A Wild Affair: Jammin' wit da Jaguars" tickets are still on sale for $45 and can be purchased until Saturday at 4 p.m. You can purchase the tickets at Lee Richardson Zoo, Baker Boot, Davis Designs, Patrick Dugan's Coffee House, Ward's Garden Center and Wheatfield's on Main. This year there has been an addition to the entertainment lineup. Not only will you be enjoying the sounds of the Smokin' No-Nos, but there will also be a comedian to tickle your funny bone. While enjoying the music and laughter you will have the opportunity to sample a diversity of cuisine from local restaurants and caterers. This is a 21 and over event, adult beverages will be available for attendees. Of course how can you forget all the cool things you can acquire from the silent and the live auctions held throughout the evening? From jewelry to events, sports-themed items, personal services, home décor, unique meals and much more, it will be hard to go home empty handed. The doors for the festivities will open at 6 p.m. Be sure to get your tickets in advance as they will not be sold at the door. The zoo will be closed all day Saturday to prepare for this wild time.
International Red Panda Day is an event organized by the Red Panda Network and held at zoological and conservation facilities around the world to help bring attention to the plight of the endangered red panda. This is the second time Lee Richardson Zoo has participated and we invite you to bring the whole family out to learn about red pandas and enjoy a variety of activities for the kids from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 21.
Cat Canyon's public grand opening will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 22. If you are a member of Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo you'll get an invitation for a sneak peek. Anyone can become a Friend of Lee Richardson Zoo, just go to www.folrz.com to find out how. This opening celebration brings to a close a major endeavor by the Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo and Lee Richardson Zoo to give the bobcats, mountain lion and jaguars a new, more spacious, natural home. Events such as "A Wild Affair" and "Boo! At the Zoo" have helped bring this endeavor to completion.
Speaking of "Boo! At the Zoo," it will be held Oct. 19 with a rain date of Oct. 26. While "Wild Affair" is for adults, this event is a spooky good time for the entire family. You can go from treat stop to treat stop throughout the zoo enjoying all of the ghouls, superheroes and monsters strolling through the zoo.
Be sure to stop by the zoo these next couple of weekends to get your dose of wild! You can keep current on zoo happenings at www.leerichardsonzoo.org. You can also "like" Lee Richardson Zoo and the Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo on Facebook to keep posted.
