Lady Buffs soccer rolls by Circle at North Cup
By BRETT MARSHALL
After a disappointing tie to Dodge City on Friday and then a shutout loss on Monday at home to Hays, venturing out of the Western Athletic Conference proved fruitful for the Garden City Lady Buffaloes soccer team on Wednesday as they blasted Towanda-Circle, 7-0, in an opening round game of the Wichita North Cup at North Stadium.
The victory, which improves Garden City to 6-5-1 overall, pushes the Lady Buffs into today's semifinals against host North, which defeated Mulvane in the other lower bracket quarterfinal. Those two teams are scheduled, weather permitting, to meet at 5:30 p.m. today for a spot in Saturday's 3 p.m. title game.
Haley Brennaman had a pair of goals and an assist while Megan Martinez also scored twice and contributed an assist to lead the Lady Buffs' offense. The seven goals equaled the team's season high output while the defense registered its third shutout.
"Today was about consistency and I thought we were better on the offense," said GCHS coach Joaquin Padilla. "We got into a good rhythm and I felt we we got some good crosses, some good passes and everything went well."
