Severe weather tips

It's the time of year when we are plagued with troublesome weather. Tornado season has already begun. Severe weather in some southern states should remind the rest of us of the importance of having a tornado preparedness plan at work and at home.

In addition to knowing where to go for protection and how to get there, a tornado preparedness plan should designate a tornado shelter. Your shelter should have a safety and survival kit that includes at least one or more flashlights, emergency cash, a battery-operated radio and extra batteries, emergency food and water and a first aid kit.

When a tornado approaches, there is just a short amount of time to make life-or-death decisions. Planning and quick response are keys to survival. Ask an out-of-state relative or friend to serve as the "family contact." Make sure everyone in the family knows the name, address and phone number of the contact person.

A tornado watch is issued by the National Weather Service when tornadoes are predicted in your area. Remain alert. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. When a tornado warning is issued, take shelter in a building with a strong foundation; move to an interior room such as a bathroom or hallway on the lowest floor and get under a sturdy piece of furniture. Stay away from windows. If shelter is not available, lie in a ditch or low-lying area a safe distance away from structures.

Mobile homes and travel trailers, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes and should be abandoned. These homes can overturn quite easily, therefore these residents should plan to seek shelter in nearby buildings. Reminder: Plan ahead.
