Learn to throw a pottery wheel
Josh Novak, a FHSU graduate candidate in ceramics will give a talk and hands-on wheel throwing demonstration on Friday at Garden City Community College, but the reception that was scheduled to take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Mercer Gallery has been cancelled.
The demonstration is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Pauline Joyce Fine Arts Building.
Admission to the gallery is free, and regular viewing hours run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, plus 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
Student visions at ARTiculation Saturday
Student works of art ranging from paintings to sculpture are on display at the Garden City Arts show "ARTiculation." An opening reception for the Garden City High School students will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, 318 N. Main St.
Fort Hays State University professor Joel T. Dugan will provide an instructional workshop from noon to 12:45 p.m. Saturday. Students are invited to attend and learn how to construct their art portfolio and submit for scholarships.
Student work will be exhibited until Feb. 15. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

GCCC offers defensive driving
The Garden City Community College Department of Public Safety is offering Defensive Driving from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 8, March 1, and April 12 in the Johns Collins Technical Building. Cost is $75 per person and includes textbook and testing-certification. The seminar can help reduce liability insurance 5 to 10 percent and reduce collision insurance. The course is widely used by courts, municipalities, schools, business and industry, government and the general public for driver improvement.
