Fanatics in every culture

In response to the Rev. Heironimus' letter:

Stop the Islam bashing. Jews who follow the Mosaic law of the Old Testament are just as guilty as Islamists. "If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or your intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him." (Deuteronomy 13:7-12 NAB). The Roman Catholic church brought us the Crusades and wholesale slaughter for not following their God. And let us not forget that they also introduced us to the Rack, Iron Maiden and numerous other torture devices during the inquisition. The Old Testament is full of slaughters and genocide in the name of religion. Their are fanatics in every culture and religion. If you study the other religions they share the basic belief of love and service to your fellow man. The fanatics and hate mongers are adept at picking phrases from the religious texts and justifying their actions from them. There are dozens of verses in the Bible that advocate the killing of non-believers but there are thousands of verses that advocate love and service to your fellow man. Don't judge others and their religions until you study their beliefs and religious texts. This wanton persecution of whole societies because of a small fanatical group needs to come to a stop. After all if the nations of the world would judge America on our pedophiles and mass murderers they would think we were diseased and should be annihilated.

Tired of being taxed to death

Can someone please tell me what in the tarnation is wrong with all the people that run this country, from the federal level all the way down to the local level? Where is your decency and common sense? If you will, finish this sentence: if you can't afford it ... .

More and more you hear individuals saying we're "broke." We can't even help our own seniors, veterans, orphans and homeless.

In the past few months we have provided aid to Haiti, Chili and Turkey. Now it's Pakistan, the home of Bin Laden, and no doubt soon to New Zealand. Literally billions of American dollars. Do you have any idea where those American dollars ultimately come from? They come from the American taxpayers and property owners. Our retired seniors, for the most part, are your property owners who take pride and joy in owning their homes. They are also living on "fixed incomes" and receive no aid nor do they receive any tax breaks upon their retirement. We have countless homeless without shelter, elderly going without needed medications and proper diet.

In our United States history class, did you ever hear "No taxation without representation" or "give me liberty or give me death?" It's all about the unfairness of being taxed to death. It goes back to what I said before. If you can't afford it don't vote/buy it and pass the taxes on to the citizens/property owners. Perhaps, to be handled more appropriately on a local level, there ought to be a referendum initiated on behalf of all property owners that only allows property owners to vote on issues that would increase real estate taxes. I, personally, would go for such a referendum as this how about you?

Great turnout for blood drive

The American Red Cross would like to say a very big thank you to all those who came out and donated blood during the critical blood shortage. We exceeded our goal both days. We really appreciated all the first-time donors, and all the people who even though they could not stay and donate the first day, came back the second day (some even brought another donor with them). It just goes to show what great people Garden City has when there is a need to help others.

Thanks go out also to the Knights of Columbus for the use of their facility and to Sam's Club for providing all the volunteer workers.

Hope to see all of you in April.
