I was so saddened to read that the Emmaus House may have to close due to lack of funds. With the economy the way it is today, a place like the Emmaus House is needed now more than ever.

My parents lived through the Depression and they taught my brothers and I to be grateful and feel blessed that we have shelter and food to eat. A person has no idea what it's like not to have these things.

I will be making a donation this year and will make this donation in memory of my parents. They loved to give to the Emmaus House. Since I cannot buy them a Christmas gift any longer, this is what I can give them.

I urge Garden City residents to do the same, make a donation in memory of a loved one or instead of buying your child that extra toy that will break in a few weeks time, to make a donation. Tell your children that this is what you are doing, so they will learn how to give.

If our community loses a place like the Emmaus House then it's like we are shutting the door on the less fortunate, and that is so sad. We need to pay it forward.

NORMA BASCUE,

Garden City
