For the second time in three years, the Garden City Buffaloes boys bowling team has earned a spot in the Class 6A state tournament.
The Buffs will compete on Friday at North Rock Lanes in Wichita, after securing the third and final team berth in last Friday's regional at Thunderbird Lanes in Wichita.
Garden City's girls, meanwhile, missed out on a state berth for the first time in three seasons after placing fifth, but did have Amanda Deihl qualify individually after rolling a 525 series to nail down the next to last individual spot.
"The boys did a really good job and were consistent all day," GCHS coach Kip Nichols.
The Buffs finished with a three-game total of 2,447 pins while Campus took the top spot with 2,494. Wichita Southeast was second with 2,474. The Buffs finished ahead of fourth-place Wichita Northwest's 2,410. Dodge City was sixth with 2,367 pins.
Senior Juan Ramirez led the way for the Buffs with a 657 series, placing him second overall in the individual competition. Ramirez had games of 236-234-187 while freshman Tristan Funk took fifth individually with a 637 series on games of 179-213-245.
"Juan really got off to a strong start, and Tristan finished really well for us," Nichols said.
The boys recorded scores of 800-822-825 in compiling their total as the low four of six scores are used in each of the three-game series.
In addition to Ramirez and Funk, Braden Davidson rolled a 572 (182-187-203), Theron Kells a 557 (179-188-190), Mickey Bridges a 524 (203-157-164) and Ethan Yardley a 506 (167-169-170).
On the girls side, Deihl amassed her 525 series with individual games of 190-158-177.
"We're certainly happy for Amanda, and she did a good job of bowling on tough lane conditions," Nichols said.
Sophomore Alexa Hemmert was 17th with a 503 series (184-157-162) and Vicki Newell was in 18th at 486 (133-157-196). Emma Stoecklein finished with a 465 (152-165-148), Brittany Palomino with a 399 (167-120-112) and Jensen Strasser at 364 (85-140-139).
