Two games into the 2008 season and coach Jeremy Hazen couldn't not have been happier with his Satanta Indians football team.
His squad had knocked off Hi-Plains League foes Wichita County (20-16) and Cimarron (14-6) in the opening two weeks.
Then the roof caved in and the Indians could manage only one victory in the final seven games to finish 3-6 as a member of the Hi-Plains League small school division.
"We are going to be young and small," Hazen said. "We have guys that were able to have lots of reps in JV games last year that will have to step up and play hard this year."
Some of that group includes a pair of juniors — running back/linebacker Kurtis Clawson (5-6, 160) and wide receiver/defensive back Shaun Bauer (5-5, 125). Two sophomores that saw action a year ago will also be counted on for leadership — wide receiver/defensive back Alan Caro (5-6, 140) and two-way lineman Eli Stalker (6-1, 170).
Of the group coming back, five are offensive starters and four return on the defensive side of the ball. Hazen will have shoes to fill in replacing his quarterback, running back, wide receiver and top lineman on both offense and defense.
"We have guys that are willing to work hard and do what is best for the team," He said.
