The first ever profressional pitch in Garden City will be thrown on May 19, opening day for the inaugural Garden City Wind Pecos League franchise. That game will be at 6:30 p.m. against the Trinidad, Colo., Triggers.

Before then, though, the Pecos League will host tryouts and spring training in Garden City.

The tryout camp is set for 4 p.m. Saturday, with pre-registration required at gardencitywind.com, and spring training begins Sunday.

“This is our league tryout,” Pecos League commissioner Andrew Dunn said on Thursday. “Right before spring training, we offer a tryout and guys have a chance to get on clubs and we have a draft.”

Then, spring training begins and final rosters will be announced on May 16.

The Wind will also have an exhibition game against the Wichita Wingnuts at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in Wichita, followed by another exhibition in Amarillo, Texas, on May 17.

“I think the excitement level is great,” Dunn said. “I think a lot of people are excited that we’re playing the Wingnuts, because people recognize that team.

“We’ve just got to get out there and get guys going, and figure out who will be able to play and who will be able to contribute,” Dunn said. “Pitching is a great unknown.”
