Holcomb 75, Elkhart 28

At Elkhart, Jacob VanCampen scored 18 points and Logan Singhisen 12 to lead the Holcomb Longhorns to a convincing season-opening win over Hi-Plains League foe Elkhart.

The Longhorns' defense limited the Wildcats to just a field goal in the opening quarter and it was 37-7 at halftime.

The Longhorns will next be in action Thursday at the Scott City Invitational when they face the Wichita Defenders at 6:15 p.m.

Syracuse 66, Hugoton 42

At Syracuse, Tate Housholder and Drew Brown combined for 37 points to lead No. 1-ranked Syracuse to a 66-42 Hi-Plains League victory over the Hugoton Eagles Friday night.

Housholder scored 21 and Brown 16 for the Bulldogs, who are coming off their most successful season in school history (third in Class 2A last March). The Bulldogs were ahead 13-5 after one quarter and extended the lead to 33-19 at halftime. It was 50-31 after three periods.

Sophomore Cody Frederick had 20 points to lead Hugoton while Zach Dunlap added 12 for the Eagles.

Syracuse will be at the Rolla Showcase later this week and faces Keyes, Okla. in its tourney opener Thursday at 5 p.m. while Hugoton has a first-round game at 8:15 p.m. Thursday in its own Red and Blue Classic against Hooker, Okla.

Weskan girls 59, Deerfield 35

At Weskan Saturday, Payton Walker scored 26 points to lead the host Lady Coyotes to a 59-35 victory over the Lady Spartans of Deerfield.

Sophomore Bridget Crandall took game-high scoring honors, though, with 27 points connecting on four 3-point field goals.

Weskan led 17-7 after one quarter, 26-13 at halftime and 37-27 after three quarters before pulling away with a 22-8 run in the fourth quarter.

Deerfield's girls will be back in action tonight in the Cimarron Bluejay Invitational and take on host Cimarron at 7:30 p.m.
