Schools to celebrate breakfast week
Garden City Public Schools will recognize National School Breakfast Week Monday through Friday to encourage participation in its Breakfast Program. The 2014 National School Breakfast Week theme, "Take Time for School Breakfast," encourages parents to consider the school breakfast program as a time-saving option for busy mornings.
Cafeterias will promote school breakfast with special menus and decorations, activities, and events all week. There will be Lunch Lady Books given away and other fun activities are planned at each school.
Every school day, Garden City Public Schools breakfast program offers students a healthy breakfast to help them get set for a busy school day. Every school breakfast served meets federal nutrition standards limiting fat, calories and sodium.
Open enrollment begins Monday
Open enrollment will begin for the summer semester on Monday at Garden City Community College. The main session, with eight weeks of classes, starts May 27 and runs through July 17. Two shorter, four-week sessions are also offered from May 27 to June 19, and from July 7 to 31.
Registration assistance is available at the GCCC Student and Community Services Center from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fridays. Free course schedules are available at the SCSC. Courses may be viewed online at www.gcccks.edu, under "Search for Classes." Enrollment for the fall semester will open April 9 for currently registered students and April 22 for the public. Fall term classes are scheduled to begin Aug. 18.
Computer skills courses starting soon
The Garden City Community College Continuing Education Department is offering a series of short-term, non-credit classes to boost computer skills this spring. The opportunities include Computer Basics. Learn introductory computer concepts and basic navigation in this course offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at a cost of $49. The class will cover topics such as word processing, browsing and managing files, using the mouse, cursor, desktop, taskbar and more. Other upcoming classes in the series include: Excel Fundamentals from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. March 10 and 12 for $159; All About the Web from 6 to 8 p.m. on March 11 for $49; Discover E-Mail from 6 to 8 p.m. on March 25 for $49.

Georgia Matthews to have literacy night
Georgia Matthews Elementary School will hold a Family Literacy Night from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Sub sandwiches and a drink will be served from 5 to 6 p.m. in the school gymnasium, 111 Johnson St. Literacy activities will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and include Dr. Seuss stories, bingo, wheel of fortune, face painting and a healthy activity during the event. There also will be a photo booth.
