CIMARRON One thing is for sure about the Holcomb Longhorns.

They don't enjoy playing basketball at a snail's pace.

That's exactly where they found themselves Friday night against the Cimarron Bluejays at halftime, clinging to a tenuous 19-14 lead thanks in part to a 5-0 run in the final 1:26 of the half.

"They did a good job of spreading the defense out against us and we just were in a hurry-up mode," Holcomb coach Scott Stegman said of the first 16 minutes. "We finally were able to pick up the defensive pressure in the second half and turned it into transition and that's where we are our best."

That became obvious quickly.

A minute into the third quarter, barely in front of the Bluejays at 19-16, the Longhorns turned up the heat with a full court press that resulted in 11 turnovers in eight minutes, helping the visitors to a 22-6 scoring spree that put the game away.

"We were able to hit the post and that always opens up our offense for us," Stegman said of his two front-line players Jacob VanCampen and Logan Singhisen who accounted for 14 of those 22 points. "If nothing's going in like it was in the first half, then you're going to have a tough, tough time."

Singhisen paced the Longhorns (13-6, 7-2) with 17 points and VanCampen added 14 by hitting 7-of-11 field goals, four of those in the third quarter.

Cimarron (6-12, 2-6) got 11 points from senior Charles Blattner but he was the lone double-figure scorer for coach Doug Minneman.

Holcomb had a 35-26 rebounding advantage as Nolan Gaede grabbed a game-high eight for the Longhorns. Cimarron's turnover woes in the third eventually led them to 24 miscues while Holcomb had just 13, nine of them coming in the final half.

The Longhorns will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Ulysses for a non-league encounter. Cimarron is at Hugoton on Tuesday in a rescheduled game.
