LAKIN Dylan Shalberg and his Lakin teammates are usually accustomed to a routine on game days arrive at school, leave either for a road game or gather for pregame meals at home, then get ready to play.

That's the normal Tuesday and Friday schedule.

Saturday's are a different deal.

If Shalberg's performance is any indication, the 6-foot-2 senior and his teammates might vote for a schedule change.

Shalberg scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to pace Lakin in a come-from-behind 53-42 non-league victory over Larned.

"It was kind of a weird day," Shalberg said of playing on Saturday. "Not having school, it was just doing things differently."

The Broncs were on the short end of a 42-37 score with 4:02 left in the game as the Indians' sharpshooting guard, Garrett Vratil, hit a pair of 3-pointers and a free throw to go from down two, to that five-point advantage midway through the last period.

From there though, Lakin coach Greg Reed switched defenses to stop Vratil, who had a game-high 22 points, by employing a box-and-one.

"Jordan (Rosales) and Alex (Jones) did a great job of keeping the ball away from him down the stretch," Reed said. "I just told them that once he got rid of the ball not to let him get it back."

The Lakin defenders did just that, not only cutting off Vratil's scoring, but the entire Larned team. Over the closing four minutes, the Broncs went on a 16-0 run to finish the game. It was Jones' scoring burst (a 2 and 3-pointer) that pulled the Broncs even at 42. Rosales scored on a driving layup to put Lakin up for good with 2:50 showing.

"We knew once we started running our offense that we'd be better," Shalberg said.

Saturday's victory was the conclusion of a good week for the Broncs, going 3-0 (wins over Holcomb, Goodland, and Larned) to improve their record to 6-3.

"The kids are starting to relax with me and know what I want," said Reed, in his first year at the Broncs' helm. "The younger ones aren't that familiar with me and I told them just to play the game because everybody makes mistakes."

In addition to Shalberg's 16 points, Colby Hamel and Jones added 10 points apiece for the Broncs. Hamel got all of his points in the second half.

The Broncs are idle until Friday night when they travel to Leoti to face Wichita County in a Hi-Plains League contest.
