If you are enrolled in a prescription drug plan, the threat of the "doughnut hole" hovers in the background. The prescription drug coverage gap, or doughnut hole, starts when your total drug costs, including what you and your plan have paid, reach $2,930. In the past, most people had to pay the full cost of their drugs in the coverage gap. However, because of the Affordable Care Act, the government now helps you pay for your drugs in the coverage gap. In 2012 you will receive a 50 percent discount on brand name drugs and a 14 percent discount on generics. These discounts will increase each year until 2020, when the coverage gap will close and you will pay no more than 25 percent of the cost of your drugs at any point during the year.

Once you get in the coverage gap, are you stuck there forever? No. You get out of the coverage gap when you have paid $4,700 in out-of-pocket costs for covered drugs since the start of the year. Your drug plan will keep track of how much money you have spent out-of-pocket on your medications. This information should be printed on your monthly statements. To make sure this information is correct, keep your receipts from the pharmacy.

Need some additional help in paying for prescriptions? The federal program known as Extra Help is available for persons with limited incomes. Monthly income guidelines are up to $1,396 ($1,891 for couples) and assets up to $13,070 ($26,120 for couples). Contact Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213 or the senior center at 272-3620 for an appointment for more information and help in applying.
