The Garden City Wind moves its season record to a best three games over .500 and into a tie for first place with Trinidad, Colo. on Monday with a 10-6 victory over Great Bend at Great Bend.
The victory improved the Wind’s record to 19-16 while Trinidad is also three games over .500 at 21-18. The teams will play a three-game weekend series in Garden City beginning Friday.
The Wind took an early lead in the third on an RBI single by Eric Esquillin and a sacrifice fly by Clay Ardeeser, making it 2-0.
Great Bend cut the lead in half with a single tally in the fourth before the Wind answered back with two runs in the top of the fifth.
Esquillin had an RBI single to score Joey Cecere and Ardeeser then singled in Esquilin.
Great Bend had a four-run uprising in the bottom of the fifth, making it 5-4 only to have the Wind continue its offensive assault with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to up their lead to 9-5.
The Wind got one run when Brandon Nelson scored on a wild pitch and then Beau Welborn tripled in a pair of runs. In their half of the seventh, the Wind got an RBI single from Eli Roundtree and another Cecere RBI single that plated Matt Consigli.
Scott Torrey picked up the win for Garden City while Toni Hernandez suffered the loss. The Wind produced 12 hits in the victory, with Cecere paving the way with three hits. Esquilin, Welborn, Ardeeser and Marino each contributed two hits.
The teams continue a four-game, home-and-home series, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when the teams play at Clint Lightner Stadium. Wednesday’s game will be back in Great Bend with the Thursday finale in Garden City.
