Another day of strong winds and low humidity is expected today, Saturday. That means it could lead to critical fire weather conditions. Strong winds could cause the fires to spread, according to the National Weather Service in Dodge City. Winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected in some areas of western Kansas, with gusts of up to 45 mph. In Hutchinson, wind speeds this afternoon are expected to be above 30 mph with gusts of 41 mph.
Impacts of the wind also could make it difficult to drive high profile vehicles, according to the NWS. Strong winds Thursday made it difficult to drive as dust blew. Part of Interstate 70 was closed west of Colby. A 11-vehicle pileup that day, caused by the winds and dust, killed three.
