The Garden City Wind took advantage of a walk and an error by the Great Bend Boom in the top of the ninth to score the deciding runs in a 5-3 win on Monday night in Great Bend.
With two outs and the score tied at 3, Manny Colon walked and then Willie Ethington reached on an error, advancing to second while Colon moved to third. Ken Olszewski made the miscues hurt as he singled to drive in both runners. A 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth by Ethington on the mound sealed the win that improved Garden City to 4-7 in the young season.
The Wind — led by a quality start from Austin Boyle — led 3-2 through seven innings, but Great Bend tied it when Darryl Baca scored on a Reece Bell double play groundball with the bases loaded, a missed opportunity to take the lead that the Wind capitalized upon.
Boyle tossed seven innings, allowing two earned run on six hits and three walks. He struck out three in the no decision. Clay Ardeeser (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in relief, getting the Wind out of the bases loaded, no out jam in the eighth by inducing the double play and then getting a groundout to short.
Ethington received the save, his second of the year. Great Bend (6-3) and Garden City meet again on the diamond Tuesday, but this time at Clint Lightner Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
