Dr. Sue Gendron, former education commissioner for the state of

Maine, will be speaking to educators from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday in

the auditorium at Garden City High School, 2720 Buffalo Way Blvd.

During her visit to Garden City, Gendron will address the following topics:

* exploration of newly released items from the assessment consortia;

* creating a sense of urgency toward change in preparation for the Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Assessments;

* integrating literacy across all content areas with specific strategies on how to do this system-wide;

* nurturing the development of future-thinking leadership practices and alignment among stakeholders.

Since 2010, Gendron has been the policy coordinator for the Smarter

Balanced Assessment Consortium. In this role, she assisted 31 states in

preparing for the next generation of state assessments.

In addition, she was named a Senior Fellow at the International

Center for Leadership in Education, where she works with states and

districts in the development of comprehensive assessment systems.
