The Garden City Wind couldn’t hold a three-run lead after six innings Wednesday night at Clint Lightner Stadium and fell 9-8 to the Alpine Cowboys in Pecos League action.
After winning 7 of 10 games, the Wind has now lost its last three games.
Alpine got its scoring under way in the top of the second when Seth McLemore led off with a double. Matt Henriksen’s single moved McLemore to third who then came home on a single by Ariel Adut.
Another single by Uta Okazaki loaded the bases before Ely Gallego singled with Henriksen and Adut racing home.
The Wind got one run back in its half of the second when Manny Colon opened with a double.
Colon advanced to third on a groundout before Ken Olszewski singled him home, making it 3-1. The Wind left two runners stranded in the inning.
The Cowboys got that one run back in their half of the fourth on an RBI single by Okazaki, scoring Adut, who had doubled with one out.
Another run in the Alpine sixth made it 5-1 when Reagan Rutledge singled home Adut. Adut had walked and then moved to second on a single by Ely Gallego.
But the Wind found a way to work themselves back into the game, answering with a three-run sixth inning.
Back-to-back singles by Manny Colon and Beau Welborn got things started. Olszewski then walked to load the bases.
Brandon Nelson added a single, scoring Colon. Eric Esquillin kept things going with another single, plating Welborn.
Alpine then brought in David Gates to replace Ely Gallego on the mound. Joey Cecere promptly singled in Olszewski. The rally was kept alive by Nick Francis’ fielder’s choice, which allowed Esquillin to score on an error by the Cowboys’ first baseman. Colon drove in Eli Roundtree with the final tally of the inning.
When the dust cleared, the Wind had somehow regained the lead, 8-5.
But there was more to come — mostly from the Cowboys. McLemore delivered the biggest hit of all, a two-run home run, and added another run on two hits and a fielder’s choice, tying the game at 8.
In the see-saw affair, Alpine took the lead back in the eighth with a run on a walk, a single, a hit batsman and an error.
The Wind missed a golden opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth, but came up short when Colon struck out swinging with runners on first and third.
In the ninth, the Wind got a runner on first, but Ethington grounded into a game-ending double play. Korie Vire picked up the win for the Cowboys while Ethington was tagged with the loss.
The teams combined for 29 hits, with Colon leading the way for the Wind with three while driving in a team-high two runs.
The Wind is now 12-13 in the North Division of the Pecos League while Alpine is 13-12 in the South Division.
