Holcomb's Tyler LaSalle more than made up for the absence of Heath Tucker and Clay Gilbert, as the senior quarterback threw for 214 yards and rushed for another 153 yards to lead the Longhorns to a 48-14 victory at Southwestern Heights on Friday night in the Class 3A-District 16 action.
LaSalle scored touchdowns on runs of 55, 19 and 11 yards while also connecting with Corey Roth on TD passes covering 43 and 46 yards.
"We talked to the kids about how important it was to be 1-0 in district play and I think they responded to that," coach Jerry Johnson said. "We still have a tendency not to finish things off, making a few good plays and then not doing well. We did that on several occasions tonight, where we weren't focused. Overall, though, we played well enough to take care of what we needed to."
In addition to LaSalle's performance, the Longhorns got a 4-yard touchdown from Aaron Hernandez and a 1-yard score by Calen Rupp.
"We got off to a really good start," Johnson said of his team's two first quarter TDs, the drives of which were just two and three plays. "Those two long runs by Tyler really got us up early and that helped."
The Longhorns were up 28-7 at halftime.
LaSalle completed 9-of-18 passes for his 214 yards while he rushed just 12 times for his 153 yards on the ground. Seven of his rushes were for 10 or more yards.
Tucker and Gilbert, both nicked up with injuries after the Ulysses win a week ago, will likely return to the lineup for the Longhorns (6-1, 1-0) when they host Lakin on Friday.
