Leadership Academy planned
Student leaders who will be a junior during the 2013-14 school year are invited to apply for the American Legion Boys or Girls State Leadership Academy to learn how the U.S. Government works. Students will get to campaign for office, create, lobby and pass a bill. The experience builds confidence, inspires leadership, and builds new friendships.
Students must be in the top half of their class, be a self-starter involved in school and community events, and be interested in government and current events.
Boys State is June 1 to 7 at Kansas State University in Manhattan. Applications and a small deposit are due March 31.
Girls State is June 1 to 6 at Washburn University in Topeka. Applications are due May 1.

GCCC offering health care programs
The Garden City Community College Continuing Education Department is offering two new programs in the health care field. They are Medical Administrative Assistant Program, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays March 10 to April 28; and Pharmacy Technician Program, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays March 11 to April 29. Each course is $999 with textbooks included, and each prepares students to enter the respective medical field and take the certification board exam if required. Clinical externships are included in the programs, as well.
